Position Summary:

 

The Behavior Intervention Specialist (BIS) is responsible for assessing, developing, implementing, and monitoring behavior support services for adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD). The BIS will conduct Functional Behavior Assessments (FBAs), develop individualized Behavior Support Plans (BSPs), provide behavioral interventions, and train direct support staff on behavior management
techniques, including the use of Antecedent-Behavior-Consequence (ABC) data collection methods.


The Behavior Intervention Specialist works collaboratively with interdisciplinary team members, families, residential providers, day habilitation staff, and clinical professionals to improve the quality of life, independence, safety, and community integration of individuals receiving services.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Behavioral Assessment & Planning:

  • Conduct comprehensive Functional Behavior Assessments (FBAs) to identify behavioral triggers, functions of behavior, and environmental influences.
    Develop individualized Behavior Support Plans (BSPs), crisis intervention plans, and behavioral strategies based on assessment findings. Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of behavioral interventions and modify plans as needed.
    Analyze behavioral data and prepare detailed reports, recommendations, and documentation. Complete behavioral reassessments and progress summaries in accordance with agency and regulatory requirements. Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings and provide behavioral recommendations.

Staff Support & Supervision 

  • Train Direct Support Professionals (DSPs) on the implementation of Behavior Support Plans.

  • Provide ongoing coaching to staff regarding positive behavior support techniques.

  • Train staff on proper ABC (Antecedent-Behavior-Consequence) data collection methods and documentation standards.

  • Conduct trainings related to de-escalation techniques, crisis prevention, communication strategies, and trauma-informed care.

Clinical & Program Support 

  • Provide direct behavioral support services to individuals with IDD in community, and day habilitation settings.

  • Support individuals in improving coping skills, emotional regulation, social skills, communication, and adaptive functioning.

  • Collaborate with psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, clinicians, and program staff regardingbehavioral and mental health concerns.
    Assist with incident review, behavioral trend analysis, and risk reduction planning.

  • Participate in quality assurance and compliance reviews related to behavioral services. 

Documentation & Compliance

  • Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential documentation in accordance with agency policy, OPWDD regulations, Medicaid standards, and HIPAA requirements.

  • Complete progress notes, assessments, training records, incident follow-up documentation, and behavior tracking reports.

  • Ensure behavioral documentation meets regulatory and audit standards.
    Maintain compliance with all state and federal regulations regarding behavioral services for individuals with developmental disabilities.

Qualifications:

Education Requirements: 

  • Candidates must possess one of the following:
    Master’s degree in psychology, Applied Behavior Analysis, Social Work, Mental Health, Counseling, Special Education, Human Services, or a related field preferred; OR

  • Bachelor’s degree in psychology, Human Services, Social Work, Special Education, or related field with significant behavioral experience working with adults with IDD.

Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum of 2–3 years of experience working with adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD).

  • Demonstrated experience conducting Functional Behavior Assessments (FBAs). Experience developing, implementing, and monitoring Behavior Support Plans (BSPs).

  • Experience training staff on behavioral interventions and ABC data collection methods.

  • Knowledge of Positive Behavior Supports (PBS) and person-centered practices.
    Experience addressing challenging behaviors including aggression, self-injurious behavior, property destruction, elopement, and verbal escalation. Experience working within residential, community habilitation, day habilitation, or vocational settings preferred.

-Ability to provide effective staff training and coaching.
 

-Knowledge of crisis intervention and de-escalation techniques.

- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
Strong organizational and time management skills.


-Proficiency in electronic documentation systems and Microsoft Office programs.

Preferred Certifications
Preferred but not required:
-Qualified Intellectual Disabilities Professional (QIDP)
-SCIP-R Certification or other crisis intervention certification
-CPR/First Aid Certification


Working Conditions
 

-Work may occur in residential programs, community settings, day habilitation programs, vocational programs, and participant homes.
 

-Position may require local travel between program sites.

 

-Must be able to safely respond to behavioral crises and emergency situations.
 

-Ability to sit, stand, bend, and move throughout the workday as required.

BIS will visit each program sites:

  • Brooklyn

  • Bronx

  • Queens

 

Physical Requirements


Ability to lift up to 25 pounds if needed.
Ability to safely implement approved crisis intervention techniques when necessary.
Ability to travel to multiple service locations.


Schedule
-Full-Time / Part-Time / Per Diem (as applicable)

-Flexible schedule may include weekends based on program needs.
