Back-to-School Shopping Tips for Parents of Autistic Children

Back-to-school shopping can be a stressful time for any family—but for parents of autistic children, it comes with unique challenges and opportunities. Whether your child is heading to a new classroom or returning to a familiar setting, here are a few key tips to make the transition smoother:

 1. Prioritize Sensory Comfort

Autistic children may be sensitive to clothing textures, tags, sounds, and lights.

  • Look for tag less, soft, or seamless clothing

  • Choose shoes with Velcro or slip-ons if tying laces is difficult

  • Consider noise-canceling headphones for loud environments like cafeterias or assemblies

 2. Create a Backpack That Works for Them

Beyond notebooks and pencils, think about what your child needs to feel regulated and safe at school.

  • Fidget tools or chewable jewelry

  • Weighted lap pad or compression vest (if calming pressure helps)

  • Visual schedule or communication cards

  • Comfort object (small stuffed animal, smooth stone, etc.)

 3. Practice New Routines Early

Autistic kids often thrive with structure and predictability.

  • Begin adjusting bedtime and wake-up routines 1–2 weeks in advance

  • Use a countdown calendar or social story to walk through the first day

  • Practice packing and unpacking their backpack so the routine feels familiar
