Back-to-School Shopping Tips for Parents of Autistic Children
Back-to-school shopping can be a stressful time for any family—but for parents of autistic children, it comes with unique challenges and opportunities. Whether your child is heading to a new classroom or returning to a familiar setting, here are a few key tips to make the transition smoother:
1. Prioritize Sensory Comfort
Autistic children may be sensitive to clothing textures, tags, sounds, and lights.
Look for tag less, soft, or seamless clothing
Choose shoes with Velcro or slip-ons if tying laces is difficult
Consider noise-canceling headphones for loud environments like cafeterias or assemblies
2. Create a Backpack That Works for Them
Beyond notebooks and pencils, think about what your child needs to feel regulated and safe at school.
Fidget tools or chewable jewelry
Weighted lap pad or compression vest (if calming pressure helps)
Visual schedule or communication cards
Comfort object (small stuffed animal, smooth stone, etc.)
3. Practice New Routines Early
Autistic kids often thrive with structure and predictability.
Begin adjusting bedtime and wake-up routines 1–2 weeks in advance
Use a countdown calendar or social story to walk through the first day
Practice packing and unpacking their backpack so the routine feels familiar
