The Origins of Disability Pride Month

Disability Pride Month was born from a pivotal moment in history: the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) on July 26, 1990. This groundbreaking legislation prohibited discrimination based on disability and affirmed equal rights in employment, education, transportation, and more.

The first official Disability Pride Day was held in Boston in 1990, the same year the ADA became law. Over time, the celebration expanded, and Disability Pride Month began to gain national recognition. Today, cities across the U.S. and beyond host parades, art shows, panels, and advocacy events throughout the month of July.
